Make sure you remind the grown-ups at home to buy enough batteries for Christmas presents, instead of taking them out of the smoke alarm; which needs testing every week.

-
The kitchen can be very busy, especially when dinner is being cooked. Try to help the grown-ups and encourage them not to use social media. Tell them to ‘keep looking while you’re cooking’.

-
Keep lit candles away from things that can burn like curtains, decorations and cards. Always blow them out before bedtime or when you leave the room.

-
Have a look around your home to make sure there are no overloaded sockets. Too many things plugged in can cause a fire. Ask the grown-ups to check with you.

-
If you’ve got a wood burner or open fire at home always have a guard in front of it when a fire is lit. This will prevent sparks from causing a fire.

-
If you see matches or lighters lying about, never touch them as they can hurt you; always tell a grown-up if you see any.

-
If you’ve got elderly people in your family; take time to check on them, or elderly neighbours, as they are at greater risk from fire.
